Stephen Ames is not a professional chef, he’s just a Dad who wields a spatula.

As a busy father of three boys living in Austin, Texas, Ames encounters the same issues that challenge most parents – getting their kids to eat healthy things that taste good.  Ames began cooking culinary creations for fun, including marvelous rosemary-seared roasted chicken.  Bingo!  They loved it and the Spatula Dad was born.

He practices techniques to make tasty food that his kids would eat, while making it fun at the same time.  “I’m a 13-year veteran of raising kids and we love to cook and eat.  We’re lucky to live where we have some great, creative chefs and plentiful healthy eating choices.” says Ames.

Although he has no formal culinary training, Ames loves to cook.  He attributes his knack for cooking as something he inherited from his two grandmothers who always had something simmering on the stove.  Growing up in San Antonio, Texas, Ames was immersed in the cooking traditions and flavors of Tex-Mex, Texas BBQ and wild game.  Combine that with techniques and regional culinary traditions he was exposed to by living for extended periods in Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans and Los Angeles, and his skills in the kitchen were refined.

As the Spatula Dad, Ames demonstrates, or rather, tries to demonstrate...his culinary adventures for viewers of bi-monthly webisodes on the website. Together with local Austin foodie-types, including real chefs, musicians and local celebrities... and a group of kids, the Spatula Dad cooks fun, easy-to-follow recipes that everyone will enjoy.  “We always make a mess, but have a good time doing it. And yes, we play with our food,” he says.

Ames is a graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and earned a Master of Arts from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California.  For the last 11 years, Ames has worked for one of the world’s biggest telecommunications companies.  In his spare time, Ames enjoys the outdoors, running, landscaping, growing exotic plants, listening to live music, creating fun videos with his kids, and of course, cooking.
